The Cotton Coaster Set makes 4 in (10 cm) round coasters in single crochet, worked in joined rounds with staggered increases so they stay flat and round. It includes four color plans, a neat slip stitch edge, and tips for keeping circles flat, which is a skill you'll use in baskets, bags, and toys.

  • Flat circles in joined rounds, 8 rounds plus an edge
  • Staggered increases for a round, not hexagonal, shape
  • Four stripe and color plans for a matching set
  • Stitch counts for every round
  • Tips for fixing ruffling or cupping

Cotton Coaster Set Pattern · first 2 sections

Materials

  • Worsted-weight (weight 4) 100% cotton, about 15 yd (14 m) per coaster; about 60 yd (55 m) for a set of four
  • 4 mm (US G-6) crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle and scissors; a stitch marker is optional for marking the first stitch of a round

Cotton is best for coasters: it absorbs moisture and handles hot mugs. Acrylic can soften under heat, so avoid it here.

Gauge: Rounds 1-4 measure about 2 in (5 cm) across. Exact gauge isn't critical, but the circle should lie flat.

  • Joined rounds: each round ends with a sl st into the first sc. The next round starts with ch 1 (not counted as a stitch), and the first sc goes into the same st as the join.
  • Magic ring: wrap the yarn around two fingers, insert the hook under both strands, pull up a loop, and ch 1 to secure. Work Rnd 1 into the ring, then pull the tail to close the center.
  • Staggered increases: on alternate rounds the increase moves to the middle of each repeat. This keeps the circle round instead of forming six corners.
