Materials and sizing

  • Worsted-weight (weight 4) yarn in acrylic, wool, or a blend: about 130 / 160 / 190 yd (120 / 146 / 174 m) for Child / Adult M / Adult L, including an optional pompom
  • 5 mm (US H-8) crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle and scissors
  • Optional: a pompom maker, or a piece of stiff card about 3 in (7.5 cm) wide

Adult L23-24 in (58-61 cm)20 in (51 cm)9 in (23 cm)5630

The hat is about 2-3 in (5-8 cm) smaller than the head it fits. That negative ease is what makes ribbing hug the head without slipping.

Gauge and stitches

Gauge: 13 stitches and 11 rows = 4 in (10 cm) in half double crochet through the back loop, measured flat without stretching. Make a small swatch first: if you have more stitches per 4 in, try a larger hook; if you have fewer, try a smaller hook.
